Hospitality in the home.

This week as well I’ve had the honor of being a guest at Momma’s Living Room. In the post titled Showing hospitality to our spouse I talk about being “hospitable” to our spouses. Marriage is important in God’s plan for us. So many times in Scripture He refers to Himself as the Bridegroom and we are His Bride. And so, in our marriages we need to Honor Him and respect our spouses, and that starts with being kind to them, like we would to guests that came over for lunch!

Worship: More than a song.

Click on the link and read a great post by Kristen. I want to say that this is a guest post, in that I sought out Kirsten and asked her to write for me , but actually I dint. Her post showed up as a related search to something else and when I read it, then I sought her out 😁.

If you’ve read my guest posts so far, you’ll know there is a common thread of worship woven in. This is because I believe worship is a major part of our Christian life, if not the most important thing. My goal is make sure its importance is known , as well as let you know how and when and where and why to worship.

There is no one way to worship, but the important thing is to worship Our God and Our Lord.

I love when Kirsten says in her post,

“Worship isn’t about the people. Worship isn’t even about the music. Worship is about giving God the honor and glory he deserves.”

This is why we worship.

“I’m coming back to the heart of worship cause it’s all about you. It’s all about you, Jesus.”

What does hospitality mean to you?

Erin Nicholson from Momma’s Living Room has invited me to write on the biblical attributes of hospitality. It’s the post titled Showing Hospitality by being present.

I’ve been privileged and honored to do so. This topic made me stretch and think outside the box.

Head on over to her blog and read what I’ve written about being kind to people outside our homes. You can also find the post on various social media, links below

Learning to pray for others.

We’ve all been told to pray. For ourselves and for others. We know Jesus prayed. Sometimes alone. Sometimes through the night. He prayed before He started anything and always Jesus prayed to His Father. But what does that mean? Where do we start? Especially if we did not grow up in the church. My aunt who spoke to her friends at her church retreat has a few suggestions. These are meant to guide you only. If you have a prayer lifestyle that works for you, continue with that, if you don’t, use these as a starting point. To read the rest of my aunt’s talk go here and here (re posted with permission).

Pray for each other. James 5:16

Prayer is a conversation with God, not a formula. Yet sometimes we might need to use a “method” to freshen up our prayer time. We can pray the Psalms or other Scriptures (such as The Lord’s Prayer), or use the ACTS method (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication). I recently came across this “Five-Finger Prayer” to use as a guide when praying for others:

  • When you fold your hands, the thumb is nearest you. So begin by praying for those closest to you—your loved ones (Phil. 1:3–5).
  • The index finger is the pointer. Pray for those who teach—Bible teachers and preachers, and those who teach children (1 Thess. 5:25).
  • The next finger is the tallest. It reminds you to pray for those in authority over you—national and local leaders, and your supervisor at work (1 Tim. 2:1–2).
  • The fourth finger is usually the weakest. Pray for those who are in trouble or who are suffering (James 5:13–16).
  • Then comes your little finger. It reminds you of your smallness in relation to God’s greatness. Ask Him to supply your needs (Phil. 4:6, 19).

RELATED POST: Becoming a woman of noble character Part 1.

Whatever method you use, just talk with your Father. He wants to hear what’s on your heart.

THUMB:

When you fold your hands, the thumb is nearest you. So begin by praying for those closest to you—your loved ones

Father, give me the wisdom to know how to pray for others.

Phil. 1:3–5 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

INDEX FINGER:

The index finger is the pointer. Pray for those who teach—Bible teachers and preachers, Teachers and those who teach children.

Paul says in 1 Thess. 5:25: Brothers and sisters, pray for us.

MIDDLE FINGER:

The next finger is the tallest. It reminds you to pray for those in authority over you—national and local leaders, and your supervisor at work (1 Tim. 2:1–2).

1 Timothy 2:1-2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

RING FINGER:

The fourth finger is usually the weakest. Pray for those who are in trouble or who are suffering (James 5:13–16).

James 5:13-16 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

LITTLE FINGER/PINKY:

Then comes your little finger. It reminds you of your smallness in relation to God’s greatness. Ask Him to supply your needs (Phil. 4:6, 19).

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

RELATED POST : Becoming a woman of noble character Part 2

Sometimes we don’t have the words to pray though. We are hurting or in shock or grieving. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the words. He is our Helper and Counsellor. When we can’t pray, He does so for us.

Until next time,

Vanessa.

What you need to know about Exodus.

Exodus is the 2nd book in the Bible and the 2nd one written by Moses. I wrote summaries of the 40 chapters which you can find here and here. Between the end of Genesis and the beginning of Exodus, over 400 years have passed. In between the Age of the Patriachs end and the Age of the slavery begins. As God had promised Abraham in Genesis several of the promises come to fruition here in Exodus. Like I said, over 400 years after they were made.

Some of the promises made and fulfilled:

  • In Genesis 12:1-3 God tells Abraham that He will make him into a great nation. This is seen fulfilled in Exodus 1:9-21. The people are too numerous and they terrify the present pharaoh who devises ways and methods to subjugate the Israelites but they continue to increase. This is also a fulfillment of God’s blessing in Genesis 1 :27-28 when He blessed Adam and Eve and told them to be fruitful and to multiply .
  • In Genesis 12:7 and Genesis 13 :14-17 while Abram (childless at both times) is in Canaan, The Lord appears to him and tells him that his children will possess that land. Joseph (Abraham’s grandson)’s siblings and their families go down to Egypt during a famine and stay there and flourish and multiply until their descendants are made slaves. With Moses they leave Egypt and come back to Canaan, the land flowing with milk and honey that is promised to them.
  • In Genesis 15:1 God tells Abram He is his shield (protection) and very great reward (provision). We see this fulfilled in Exodus 13:22, Exodus 14: 13-14, Exodus 14:19-20 where the glory of the Lord goes before the Israelites as a cloud during the day and a fire during the night. This fire comes between the Israelites and the pursuing Egyptians at the Red Sea and allows the Israelites to cross over on dry ground (protection). This same presence of God brings manna for the people to eat and drives quail into their camp later in Exodus 16 (provision). God alone protected them from their enemies and provided for them for 40 years as He promised.
  • In Genesis 15:13 God tells Abram that his descendants will be ill treated and slaves in a country not their own for 400 years. This is recorded in Exodus 12: 40-41.
  • In Genesis 15:14 God tells Abram that his descendants will plunder the people when they leave their slavery behind. This happens when the people after Moses’ commandments, ask their neighbors for things, in Exodus 12: 35-36.

RELATED POST : Exodus part 1: A God who speaks.

If you see other promises fulfilled in Exodus, please write them in the comments below.

In Exodus, we see the chosen people enslaved. We see God’s awesome display of strength and power in the signs and miracles He performed. We see a strong and militant people (Egypt) cowed and terrified because of the Israelites. We see a miraculous deliverance by God. This is so spectacular that He gives the people instructions on how to remember these events and also to teach future generations so that they do not forget that they serve a Mighty God. (Even Stephen reminds the council of Pharisees and Sadducees of this during his speech to them in Acts, before he was stoned).

In Exodus, we see God’s faithfulness displayed again and again and again. In protecting them. In guiding them. In providing ( food and water) for them. We see a continuous grumbling and murmuring and general disobedience on the part of the Israelites. They complain about their lack (of food and water the most) often without remembering the miracles they had seen God do on their behalf. We see God’s goodness and grace in that He was patient with them, until He was tested to the limit. We see Moses interceding (standing the gap) for the people often. Moses reminded God of His promises and His character and His strength. He does this not for the people but for the Lord’s sake. So that His Name will be known all over the earth and that other peoples will Worship Him.

In Exodus we are given glimpses of God’s splendor and of His matchless beauty and His creative genius. Here (after Adam and Eve are made to leave the garden of Eden) we see God coming down to dwell among His people (the Tabernacle). We see the Spirit filling certain individuals and giving them the wherewithal to make things for the Tabernacle and items for the Priesthood according to God’s very specific instructions.

RELATED POST : Exodus part 2: The God who dwells among us.

Exodus is a beautiful example of God fulfilling His promises, of His dwelling among us, of Him choosing us to His people. It’s also an example of the consequences of disobedience and of complaining against God and His will. May we always learn from the book. To be obedient to His word. And not to think we know our own way.

Please share your favorite parts of Exodus in the comments below.

Until next time,
Vanessa.

Becoming a woman of noble character Part 2

Last week I posted what my aunt shared with her church group (with her permission :-)). This is part 2. You can read the first part here.

RELATED POST : Becoming a woman of noble character Part 1.

We are in Proverbs 31

10 [a]A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies. She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 ‘Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.’
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honour her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
  • 4. Cultivate Optimism by Surrendering everything to God.
  • Stay Positive. When it rains look for rainbows. When it is dark, look for stars.
  • Surrendering means – Lord everything you want me to do, I will do.
  • Putting God first and submitting to his rulership. This will make all the difference in our lives.
  • Why is it hard for us to say – I surrender everything to you? We want what we want and are afraid of what God might ask of us.
  • 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV) Therefore Humble yourselves, under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon HIM, for he cares for you.

5. Commit to your goals by working hard for the Lord:

  • Most people who fail from reaching their dream, fail not from lack of ability but from lack of commitment.
  • Ecclesiastes 9:10(NIV)- Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.
  • Ephesians 6: 5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
  • 6. Plant yourself so that you will bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit:
    • All of us are investing and planting something in our lives every single day.
    • We are reaping the benefit in the quality of our lives today is the result of something we planted and harvested in the past – both Good and bad.
    • Jesus said in John 15:5 that if we abide (remain/to stay/to dwell) in him, we will bear much fruit.
  • Nine Ways to produce a great crop of fruitfulness.
    1) Plant seeds of Love.
1 John 4:7 Let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
    2) Plant seeds of Joy.
Christ said in John 15: – These things I have spoken to you, that my Joy may remain in you and that your Joy will be full.
    3) Plant seeds of Peace.
The peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
    4) Plant seeds of Patience.
Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete lacking nothing. James 1:4.
    5) Plant seeds of Kindness.
Colossians 3:12 : Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
    6) Plant seeds of Goodness.
Every Good tree bears good fruit, and a bad tree bears bad fruit. A Good tree cannot bear bad fruit nor can a bad tree bear Good Fruit Mathew 7:17-18
    7) Plant seeds of Faithfulness.
He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is also unjust in what is much…Luke 16:10
    8) Plant seeds of Gentleness.
The bible says “a servant of the Lord must not quarrel, but be gentle to all.. 2 Timothy 2:24:
    9) Plant seeds of Self-Control
2 Peter 1:5-6 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness.

    7. Nurture your relationships in both families:

    • The happiest people alive have deep meaningful relationships. Nurture them and watch them grow. You can start right now.

Having somewhere to go is home, having someone to love is family, having both is blessing.

  • We all desperately need a sense of Family, of Relationship, of belonging. God created for us to be in families where you can be accepted, needed and appreciated.
  • In addition to biological families, our relationships with our church families is also crucial to our well-being.
  • It is very important to be yoked with people who walk closely with God.
  • The bible tells us in Proverbs 12:26 That the Righteous should choose their friends carefully, as the wicked will lead them astray.

Please don’t think this study or the previous one is to add burdens on you. It’s not. It’s to turn your eyes on to Jesus and let Him flow through you. Our cry, our desire is to honor Him and to make Him known through us.

In Him, until next time,

Vanessa.

A guest post by Erin Nicholson.

Many of us have been where Paul and Silas were. If not in an actual prison, we have been terribly wronged and for no reason of our making. We have been abused, insulted, mocked and scorned. For honoring God and proclaiming Him to others. Do we turn to worship in that moment? Or do we turn away from the same God? Read Erin’s post below and see what struck her from Acts 16. Erin is passionate about using her life to bring glory to Him. I have been blessed as I read her blog “Momma’s Living Room” (links below). She has ideas and topics that she would love for guests to collaborate with her (please go to her website if you are interested). I hope you are drawn to worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth more and more each day.

Wronged and Worshiping

There I was, six-years-old, steaming mad and standing in time-out.

My mom had invited him over. He was a four-year-old little boy named Angel. Unlike what his name would suggest, he was anything but an angel. He was mean, disruptive, and did virtually anything he pleased despite his mom’s laughing requests for him to behave. Hitting, biting, slapping, punching, spitting, head-butting, none of these behaviors were off the table for Angel. His parents thought he was cute and funny, however no one else in the room agreed. I remember at a prior playdate how Angel’s parents had held him while he kicked and screamed and they all exited the door as a family. Relief followed their exit and it was oh so sweet.

But there I was, standing in time-out all because of Angel. During this playdate, our moms visited upstairs while my siblings, Angel, and l played downstairs in our split-level house. It did not take long for Angel to be his disruptive little self. He began slamming the rolling closet doors open and shut. It was deafening. Despite our protests, he continued to do this over and over and over. My mom called for the noise to cease and still Angel did not stop this behavior. For some reason, my mother assumed the loud banging was me, and to this day I have no idea why. While the noise persisted, my mom angrily called me up the stairs to answer for the noise.

When she called me upstairs, Angel had chosen that exact moment to cease the slamming of the closet doors.

She began by asking me about the slamming of the closet door. I answered that it was Angel, but my mother would not believe me. That landed me in time-out for lying. When my time was up, she again asked about the slamming of the closet door. I insisted that it was Angel but my mother did not believe me. She returned me to time-out for lying. I answered truthfully when she repeated her question and landed in time out for a third time. When she asked after my third time of time out, I lied. I answered that I had slammed the closet door. I figured lying was better than standing in time out all day. The worst part was that I had to apologize to Angel’s mother for accusing her son of slamming the closet door.

I was angry. I returned downstairs to that same bedroom to discover Angel laughing at me for getting in trouble.

Have you ever gotten in trouble for something you did not even do?

Read Acts 16:16-34

There was once a slave girl who, through a demonic spirit, had the power to tell people secrets about their lives. One day, she decided to follow Paul and Silas around. She announced who they were (servants of the Most High God), and what they were doing (proclaiming the way of salvation). She did this for days. Can you imagine how annoying that would be? It is bad enough when a younger sibling follows us around to pester us, but what about a stranger? What about someone who could easily be mistaken for being a part of Paul and Silas’ ministry? After days of her persistent and unwelcome company, Paul was annoyed. He turned around, commanded the demonic spirit to come out of her.

Part of me wonders why he had not chosen this action sooner. Had he not recognized that she was possessed by a demonic spirit? Had he weighed the consequences of what might happen to them if she was freed? Whatever the reason, this girl was freed from that demonic spirit.

The problem with his act is that it set her free from this demon. The problem with that freedom is that her owners had lost their income. This angered them greatly. They brought Paul and Silas before the rulers and pleaded their case. They claimed that Paul and Silas were disturbing the city by bringing freedom through the message of salvation and through their actions. Paul and Silas were disruptive, they accused.

Paul and Silas were punished for setting this girl free. They were punished because her owners had lost revenue. Paul and Silas were beaten with rods without a trial and without consideration of their Roman status. They were thrown into prison. Their side of the story did not matter, much like my six-year-old self declaring my innocence.

Paul and Silas did not respond to these unjust circumstances like most of us would have.

They worshiped without care of who might hear. They did not care if their worship offended others and they did not care about the consequences of raising their voices up in worship and prayer. In their same situation, we might worry about further beatings or about the unkind words the other prisoners may utter. They did not care about any of that, their only concern was expressing their adoration to their savior. Nothing would hinder their love for God.

They worshiped despite being wronged and publicly humiliated. How many of us would have taken our anger out on those around us? How many of us would have lashed out at our loved ones because of our tough and humiliating day? How many of us would have chosen to keep to ourselves and nurse our wounded egos? Where we might choose to wallow in the “why me” mentality, Paul and Silas chose to pray and worship. Where we might withdraw from the Lord, they pressed in.

They worshiped through their physical pain. A lot of us might use our physical pain as an excuse to not worship. We prioritize the aches and pains of our bodies over the voice of the Lord. Paul and Silas chose to worship in spite of, through, and because of their pain. Their circumstances did not change their belief that God was good.

My own unjust circumstances caused me to question my mother’s love for me. I questioned why she would not believe me, her choices, and her reasoning behind my punishment. Paul and Silas never questioned whether God loved them. They never questioned God’s goodness, sovereignty, and care for them. It did not change their mission to serve Him. Worship focused them on who God was and all the reasons why He was worthy of their worship.

Next time you face your Angel, remember Paul and Silas’ response to worship God. Do not let your Angel make you lose sight of God’s love for you and His amazing goodness.

Becoming a woman of noble character Part 1.

Recently my aunt S, had an opportunity to speak to the women of her church at a retreat. She spent a great deal of time in prayer and preparation for it first though and what she had to say had a great impact. I’m splitting it up into a few posts and will be post them on here (with her permission :-). I’m working on a post on the book of Numbers right now and as with Leviticus , a book that I thought would finish quickly , is taking a long time. To read and understand and to put it into my words. Scripture certainly has a ton of pearls , all waiting to be found.

My aunt first spoke on the Proverbs 31 woman. A woman of a good and noble and virtuous and moral character. Please leave comments about what blessed you and what helped you and it will encourage her as well.

10 [b]A wife of noble character who can find?

Some of the things we can do , to become a woman of good character are

1.Express Gratitude/Take control of your thoughts:

    • Never let the things you want, make you forget about the things you have.
    • Count your blessings-name them one by one.
    • We have so much to be grateful for in this life. Each and every day. But constant life demands, struggles, and worries give more room for defeat than to a heart of thanks.
  1. When we are weary, tired, facing personal losses and struggles… We begin to develop negative thoughts that are played over and over, like in a circular motion in your head? What if this had happened? If only I had done that? I am such a failure? Punishing thoughts?
    • A big part of standing against the enemy of our souls is taking control of our minds.
    • You have a choice of what you can allow in your minds. If you don’t take control of your minds, the devil will.
  • These cyclical thoughts are not God giving you a revelation of your life, mind etc. It is the enemy gaining control of our thoughts.
  • Paul says in In 2 Corinthians 10: 5- We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. The bible clearly tells us that we must learn to bring every thought into captivity.
  • How can we overcome this? – Through prayer, faith and believing the truth about God’s word.
  • Take some time today to express gratitude to others who God has used in your life—your family, friends, teachers, mentors, spiritual leaders.2. Savor Life’s Joys because God Made you special:
    • When you learn about the good things in life, it raises your spirit. The real beauty of life is in each precious moment, stop and smell the roses.
    • Rick Warren says – God made you for his pleasure. Revelation 4:11 says, “For you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.
    • Our lives matter to God as he uniquely created us. King David mentions in (Psalm 139:13, 16 NIV) “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb .… Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
  • Ecclesiastes 2:24 (NIV): A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find Joy in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,
  • Ecclesiastes 7:14 (NIV) When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future.
  • Stop Overthinking – Free yourself from Ungodly Fear: Thinking too much complicates your life and creates a problem that wasn’t there in the first place. It wears us down worrying that something we fear is going to happen. You do not have to entertain every thought that comes to your mind. God does not want us to live in fear. Fear does not come from Him. The enemy can make us afraid of everything, especially our future. In order to protect ourselves from ungodly fear, we must care more about what God says than what the world says. Proverbs 29:25 (NIV) Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe. Fearing people and what they say can set us on a dangerous trap.

3. Avoid Social Comparison As Everyone Has a purpose:

  • Most of our insecurities come from comparing our behind the scenes with other people’s highlight reel.
  • It is never too late to seek the purpose that God has planned for your life. When you surrender to the Lord and declare your utter dependence on him, he will set you on that path.
  • We waste too many years trying to figure out what we are supposed to be doing and miss the most important fact of the purpose God created us for.
  • Romans 11:29; (NIV): The gifts and the calling of Our God are irrevocable. That means that what he has given you he will never take back a.k.a will not be repealed or annulled.
  • The exception is the anointing of the Holy Spirit. If you sin and do not repent, you can loose it.
  • He wants you to have a clear vision for your life. He wants to reveal to you where your gifts and talents lie, so that you can develop them for the glory of God. He knows how to get you there.
  • Ephesians 1:11(NIV) In him we were also chosen (obtained an inheritance) , having been predestined (your destination has already been defined) according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,
